State and Local courts’ legal system is archaic and full of usability issues & dead end paths, which can lead to poor accessibility practices and data breaches. But they operate on expensive, decades-old technology that erodes trust & prevents full participation.

📑 OUTDATED MODES FOR CASE FILING

The Indiana Court's website to file cases, is confusing and directs users to directions on how to file a case in person or digitally, instead of directly aiding them in the process of completing their e-filing. Additionally, the cases are hand filed if the sealing is done in person, instead of allowing indivuals directly into your case management system.

RESEARCH

RESEARCH

During our interviews at the Indiana State Court in the Warren Township Trustees Office we were able to interview pro bono lawyers and individuals filing eviction sealing cases (October 2024.) These were questions that were asked to the Pro Se, while looking at the wireframes that are digital version of their eviction sealing case forms.

  • I’m going to walk you through some early design ideas for e-filing these forms

  • For each of these screens, i’d like to hear your thoughts

    • What stands out to you

    • What is confusing

    • What is missing

    • What do you like

    • What would not work in real life

    • Anything else that comes to mind

    • Confirmation - what happens at the end

      • Do you know what happens next after filing?

        • How often do people encounter issues like if the filing needs to be redone

      • Follow up questions even if everything was right?

      • What would you expect to happen next?

FINAL PRODUCT

Given my status as an intern, I was solely engaged in this aspect and had no opportunity to witness the product's evolution post-research. My core focus was on research and User Interface (UI). The initial step was constructing the wireframes with the Material User Interface (MUI), which I then tailored to align with the website of the Indiana State Court.

Below, you can see four different variations of the same form, each with a different style of text box. My mentor and I both decided on these UI elements after doing a few rounds of feedback, and the flow shown on the Figma, is ultimately what we had decided on!
